Giveaway For The Tots!

LEGO Santa Yoda

You may have seen the post I made in the forums last week about LEGOSantaYoda.com pledging to donate up to 1 million gifts to the US Marine Corps’ Toys For Tots program. The catch is they only donate one gift for each e-greeting sent from the website and so far the total is limping along at just over a hundred donations a day.

Let’s see if we can’t kick that number up a notch. Ace has generously offered a MISB 8095 General Grievous Starfighter set to one lucky winner chosen at random who sends an e-greeting from LEGOSantaYoda.com to giveaways@fbtb.net. Make sure the message reads FOR THE TOTS! and feel free to send as many as you like. The more you send, the more chances you have and the more donations get made to a great charity. The giveaway ends when they shut their program down, so be quick and get those greetings in!

As an added bonus, I’ll send a little extra something to the person who sends the most greetings so let’s get to work spreading the holiday cheer!

Pre-Launch Guild Program Ends Tomorrow

As we prepare for Early Game Access to Star Wars™: The Old Republic™, we’re working to ensure that those of you who have registered guilds as part of our Pre-Launch Guild Program experience a smooth transition into the game. To that end, we want to remind you all that today is your last chance to finalize your guild before we bring an end to the Pre-Launch Guild Program*.

Before 11:59PM CST tonight, make sure that you’ve done the following:

Ensured that your guild meets the requirements for import to the gameReviewed all pending guild application requestsOptionally, designated your guild’s Allies and AdversariesMade any final changes to your Guild

At the end of the Pre-Launch Guild Program and before your guild is deployed to The Old Republic, guilds on the website may not be altered in any way. This includes creating/disbanding guilds, adding/removing guild members, promoting/demoting guild members, adding/removing allies and adversaries, as well as changing guild's server type, time zone, and language preference. During this period, guilds can continue posting in their public and private forums. Prior to Early Game Access, you will be notified by email to check the website for your guild’s deployment status.

Now is the time to make sure that your guild meets the criteria to be transferred into the game, so visit the Guild HQ now! Remember, one of the requirements to have your guild ported to the game is that you redeem a Pre-Order Code at our Code Redemption Center. If you haven’t pre-ordered the game yet, you still have time. Visit our Pre-Order page, secure your copy and redeem your Pre-Order Code to help ensure that your guild is transferred to the game for launch!

To learn more about guilds in The Old Republic, check out the Guilds Game System page for details and visit the Guilds FAQ for answers to commonly asked questions.

*Customers who pre-order Star Wars: The Old Republic will be able to play the game before the official launch. “Early Game Access” is the period of time before the official game launch when pre-order customers may access the game. Early Game Access may be up to 5 days. The length of your Early Game Access depends on the date and order in which you redeemed your Pre-Order Code at the Code Redemption Center. See Pre-Order FAQ for more details.

** We will make reasonable efforts to ensure that qualifying guilds are imported into a server that meets your specified preferences, but we cannot make any guarantees given the anticipated volume of guilds (among other factors). All server placements therefore remain in our sole discretion. We also cannot take responsibility for technical errors or glitches that prevent your guild from importing into the game as planned. See Terms of Service for more details.

The Art and Making of The Old Republic

Chronicle Books has released a new book which highlights the process of creating Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. Co-written by former Star Wars Insider editor Frank Parisi and BioWare Writing Director Daniel Erickson, this book chronicles the creation of the game, with over 150 pages of conceptual artwork and interviews with various members of the development team.

Lead Concept Artist Arnie Jorgensen discusses how the BioWare art team came up with the look for the Bounty Hunter class in The Old Republic.

The Art and Making of Star Wars: The Old Republic includes over one hundred pieces of artwork, many of which you have never seen before. Much of the artwork is accompanied by text describing the process of creating each class and every world as well as the process of working in this previously unexplored time period in Star Wars™ lore.

In addition to working on creating a familiar-yet-different feel to the Star Wars galaxy to represent an age over 3,000 years before the rise of Darth Vader, the book also explores some of the content created exclusively for the game. In the below sample, we can see some of the concept art for the many creatures that inhabit the previously unseen world of Voss, as well as a couple of familiar creatures.

This book is available now, and you can purchase it through the book's publisher, Chronicle Books, as well as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and other retailers.

Toys’R'Us BOGO 50% off on LEGO Star Wars, Harry Potter, Cars

ToysRUs.com is having a BOGO sale on all LEGO Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Cars sets that are in stock. Buyer beware: a lot of the sets have a slight markup over MSRP so your actual savings may be less than anticipated. Still, if you combine it with the $25 off purchases of $150 or more by using your MasterCard at checkout, you might be able to get some pretty nice savings. You’ll also get free shipping once your order reaches $49 or more. Deal is good online and as far as I can tell, is only good for Saturday November 26th. It is unknown at this time if the deal is also good in store. Not into Star Wars or Harry Potter or Cars LEGO sets? Fear not, for they will have a BOGO 50% off sale starting Sunday November 27 through December 3rd on all themes EXCEPT Star Wars, Ninjago, and video games.

Glee cast w/ Chewbacca

Chewbacca visits the set of the hit Fox show Glee to add some intergalactic Wookiee love… right after Life Day, no less.

Glee actors Kevin McHale, Harry Shum Jr., Chris Colfer, Chord Overstreet, Damian McGinty, Dianna Agron and Jenna Ushkowitz tweeted about their Wookiee hugs on the set!

We already knew Glee star Chris Colfer was a die-hard fan when he tweeted about his Chewbacca backpack this year, but it even cooler to know that ALL the Gleeks love Wookiees!

Fingers crossed that Jane Lynch shows up in a Darth Vader costume!

Rare Empire Cast Interview Surfaces

November 29, 2011

On the heels of the recent early Mark Hamill interview we discovered a couple weeks ago, StarWars.com contributor Bob Miller sends a heads up on another rare interview – or set of interviews – from a press junket surrounding the 1980 release of The Empire Strikes Back.

Recently posted from the archive of reporter Bobbie Wygant, this lost interview, which appears to have occurred at the 20th Century Fox Studios press event in early May, 1980, includes some rare conversations with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Dave Prowse, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, and director Irvin Kershner.

Some of the highlights include Hamill discussing his newborn son, Nathan, who he jokes might be available for the role of an “eight-year-old” Luke for the prequels (well, he got the age right, but was a generation off!). Another treat is the rare dual interview with Harrison Ford and Anthony Daniels, who we’ve rarely seen interviewed together. Dave Prowse also has some detailed information regarding the Darth Vader masks used on Star Wars and Empire, and how they are different (Vader historians take note!).

Most amusingly, though, interviewer Wygant closes with the tease that if Lucas continues with all nine chapters of his Star Wars saga, “the Force may be around until 2001!”

Check out the 13-minute video here.

San Francisco Builds Giant LEGO Yoda Santa

November 21, 2011

This weekend, Star Wars fans in San Francisco gathered in Union Square to help LEGO Master Builders construct a 12-foot tall LEGO Yoda Santa from about 250,000 bricks!

Wired reports:

Contributing some brick building to an undertaking like this is a strangely satisfying thing. Participants create large ‘bricks’ which are used to scale up from a model. Because the whole thing builds so quickly, you really feel like you’re part of making a LEGO creation. The crowds of adults and kids getting involved today were all having a wonderful time building, chatting and sharing hints.

Star Wars Advent Calendar Craft

November 28, 2011

By Bonnie Burton

Counting down to the holidays can be fun, especially when you make this Star Wars Advent Calendar. You never know who will be peaking behind the door each day! Will it be a C-3PO reindeer? Or maybe Yoda baking cookies? Create this one-of-a-kind funny calendar for December using old Christmas cards and Star Wars Insider magazine cut-outs!

What You Need:

Star Wars Insider magazine White cardboard Glue Scissors Old holiday cards and gift wrap scraps Printout of numbers 1-31 Clear tape

Instructions:

1. Cut out the heads of your favorite Star Wars characters from old Star Wars Insider magazines and printouts. You’ll need 31 heads (one for each day of December).

2. Be sure to also cut out letters too so you can spell out “Advent Calendar” if you want.

3. Cut out images of Santa, elves, tree decorators, snowmen, reindeer and other holiday characters from old Christmas cards and gift wrap scraps. Match up Star Wars heads with different holiday cut outs and glue them on to create funny scenes.

4. See how many different kinds of scenes you can make with all the different Star Wars character heads. It may be easier to group characters together like the reindeer in this picture.

5. Place all your new cut-out scenes on a big piece of white cardboard to see where you want them to go on the calendar, then paste them down with glue.

5. Printout numbers 1-31 on a piece of paper (or handwrite them) then cut out all the numbers. These will be the “doors” on your calendar. Tape them over each of your character’s faces in a way that you can easily lift up the paper to see who’s hiding behind it. Add white glitter to the calendar to give it a sparkle-snow effect.

Make advent calendars for other holidays and your birthday too! Be creative!

Star Wars Napkin Rings Craft

November 22, 2011

By Bonnie Burton

During this holiday season, eat your meals in style with these fancy felt napkin rings of your favorite Star Wars characters! These napkin rings are easy to make and fun to use for any meal worthy of Jabba the Hutt.

What You Need:

Velcro circles Scissors Craft glue Small googly eyes Black, beige, gray, red, dark green, light green, brown and purple felt squares

How to Make Star Wars Napkin Rings:

1. Cut rectangles 2 inches wide and 7 1/2 inches long from the felt. This will be the body of your napkin ring.

2. Cut out a slug-like shape from the dark green felt and the exact shape but smaller from the beige felt. Glue googly eyes and a thin line of black felt for the mouth on the beige felt piece, then glue that on the green piece. Now you have Jabba the Hutt!

3. For Yoda cut a circle and two small triangles from the light green felt for his face and ears. Glue on googly eyes, a small green felt square for a nose and a small red triangle for a mouth. Yay for Yoda!

4. Cut out felt squares, 1 1/2 inches wide and 2 1/2 inches long, in different colors. Glue your characters on different squares. Then glue each character square on the left end of your long felt rectangle strips.

5. Repeat step 4 with different characters if you want to make a whole set of napkin rings. We made Jabba the Hutt, Admiral Ackbar and Yoda. Use other shapes of felt and experiment with making other Star Wars characters like R2-D2, Princess Leia, Ahoska Tano, C-3PO, Anakin Skywalker, Plo Koon and more!

6. Glue a Velcro dot at the end of your rectangle strip. (Most Velcro dots are self-adhesive so you may not have to actually glue it to your felt.) This will fasten your napkin ring to the other end of the felt when you wrap it around a napkin!

7. Now wrap your ring around a napkin and secure it to the Velcro dot to make a ring. Place next to your silverware at your next celebration dinner. Time to eat in Star Wars style!
